Sorry seems to be the hardest word

Sorry for the hiatus. I was trying to set up a new blog, but apparently I can't be anonymous any more and they are demanding to know my phone number before they'll let me open an account.

Since I refuse to give these evil corporate trolls access to my personal data (especially given the torrents of filth I post on these blogs), I'm now stuck.

So it looks like you may not after all be benefiting from any more LeDuckery. Unless you have an alternative suggestion, of course...

Just give them a fake number, or the number of an outspoken anti gay group that lists their number online.

I'm afraid they've thought of that -- they SMS a code to the number you give them, that you then have to input to validate your account. Evil trolls.

Google Voice or Skype Number which you then cancel once the verification is done?

Crap. Are there any other free blog sites that would let you register? What, for example, about this Tumblr malarky?

You can get an anonymous SIM card from Tesco (pay with cash and don't use your Clubcard on that occasion) and, if you're feeling flush, a dirt-cheap second phone in which to keep it: otherwise just pop it temporarily into your mobile. Just think of the possibilities a second anonymous mobile could offer! I'm sure this must be the route taken by evil folk who plan heists and worse.

Otherwise how about a rarely-used payphone at some establishment?

Try tumblr.

Hurts to suggest it, but could you maybe recycle one of the earlier blogs? ie delete current content and re-use the space? Can always back data to personal space for the future first.

Do you have an old number/phone you no longer use? Or a friend with something similar who has also moved house?

Buy a prepaid SIM card and throw it away afterwards.

Try buying one of those disposable cell phones that have a fixed number of minutes on them; untraceable if you use cash.

Don't give up! From far away I appreciate your site frequently!
What about getting a "go phone" or equivalent...give them the number, get the verification and then ditch it? Either that, or throw them off completely - a fake name, a phone number of someone friendly who will oblige to say "Yes, I'm the right man." and a temporary email address.

Have a trusted friend allow you to give their number, the blog will send a text, your friend will reply. If the blog calls you in the future, friend will say, "Sorry, you have the wrong number, no LeDuc at this number."
Try it. You have a great blog, unique and intellectual. Dont close down. Please !!
Regards,
R.

I have not checked before writing this, but can yahoo messenger or google voice or something allow one to receive texts whilst online instead of on one's phone?

My dear LeDuc,
Torrents, yes. Filth, no (unless you allow the effluent of beautiful bodies: I refer to steam locomotives)

And, reverting to my editorial status, "evil trolls" is a redundancy since trolls are, by definition, evil. I find "troglodytes" to be useful since few people have any idea what the blue blazes it means - your erudite readers excepted.

In short, I hope you manage to resolve the impasse.

Sod them - couldn't you just use another blogging platform? Tumblr is not squeamish about gay content, and seems to offer unlimited or at least much more space for photos. It's teaming with very ordinary gay male porn and could do with something more original.

i'd second (or third, or fourth) the tumblr suggestions - seems a much less nannyish blogging platform

Evil Corporate Trolls Indeed!
I hope there is another blog provider out there as you will be sorely missed - yours is only blog I stop by regularly for a leisurely read with a nice cuppa, since the weird and witty mix is so much more stimulating than just the unending succession of naked guys you find everywhere else. Plus where else will we all find out about trains - the real reason we are here of course!
Best of luck for the future whatever you decide and thank you for your blogging efforts thus far.

Blogger doesn't seem such a good idea, especially as they delete blogs without warning as well as demand personal info. I hope you can find an alternative; it would be tragic if you have to close.

Thank you very much for all your helpful suggestions -- much appreciated!

Being immensely mean, I have no intention of paying money to buy a disposable phone, just so you lot can keep receiving free porn. Which leaves the tumblr option.

I've been happily exploring tumblr, and two things strike me:

Control
As far as I can work out, I have to use one of their garish (free) templates, and there is no way to change the default fonts and colours. Which is a bit disappointing.

Images
Much more importantly, I think the only way to upload an image is if it already has an URL. That doubles my work: I have to upload a photo from my vast porn stash (which I keep solely for your benefit, of course...) to flickr or some such, and then I have to upload the same image from flickr to tumblr.

That can't be right, can it?

Bottom line
I'm happy to give this tumblr thing a go, provided someone can tell me how to avoid having to double-post every image. Ideas, anyone...?

How much is a throwaway cell phone, and do you have a PayPal account? It'd certainly be worth it to me to see this blog continue.

LeDuc, it's not just about the free porn, although everyone enjoys that too, probably. Should we take up a collection for the phone? If that will help. I do understand meanness.

The basic free Tumblr template is very simple in design - the annoyingly garish and fiddly ones I think you have to pay for. You can just paste photos into the post - not necessary to have a URL.

LeDuc said...

Vilges Suola: That's great news, but -- HOW? When I click the "photo" icon in post composition, it gives me a pop-up box where the only option is to enter an URL.

HOW do I paste photos into the post?

bushbabies said...

from the tumblr dashboard [http://www.tumblr.com/dashboard], if you select 'photo' from the options across the top [http://www.tumblr.com/new/photo], you should get a dialog page headed "upload a photo" - on there i'm seeing a text box with a 'browse' button next to it - that should be the way to upload a local file.

there's a link 'use a url instead' underneath

is this what you have also on your tumblr dashboard?

Make a new post asking the last question again - someone is bound to know. Or fuck principles for one second, for the sake of your legions of fans and all the love we feel, and buy a bloody phone. Or even start making money from your site in some way for a phone fund and donate the rest to charity. Tiro PS Of course so many of us would send you the money if we could!

LeDuc said...

Brilliant! I was in the "compose post" mode, which I suppose is intended only for text. It seems odd to me to separate out the two ways of uploading photos, but who am I to complain?

Anyway, thanks for that. Will now crack on with my experiments!

Why not use wordpress? Much much simpler and easier to use without google's ludicrous data collection.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for going to all this effort just to make us happy. I enjoy every thing about your blog and hope you continue in whatever format you choose.

And...thanks for the laughs!

Just click 'copy' on the photo you want, and paste it into your post. I won't show in the 'draft' but it will ahow on the blog.
